What is VolSignals?

VolSignals provides research, options analytics and education centered on dealer positioning and hedging. Its core subject is how options exposures may influence the behavior of the underlying market, especially SPX and related index instruments.

The most useful starting point is to distinguish its products. VS Pro is a research membership. VS3D is a positioning and exposure platform. RTM is a full-session live room. Educational courses address the mechanics behind the analysis. These serve different needs, and access to one should not be assumed to include the others.

For someone researching VolSignals, the main question is whether they want to learn the framework, hear analysts apply it, or work directly with the data. That decision matters more than choosing the largest-looking collection of features.

VS Pro: the research and commentary membership

The VS Pro page describes a morning meeting at 8:30 AM Eastern Time on trading days, available through Zoom and Discord, followed by written commentary during the session. Replays, research, workshops and Q&A form part of the membership’s broader offering.

This format suits a trader who wants an explained view of the day’s positioning and a record of how that interpretation changes. Before the open, the useful output is a conditional plan: which areas matter, what would reinforce the view and what would invalidate it.

Keep the analyst’s reasoning alongside the levels. A number without its expiration context, underlying product or assumed volatility environment can quickly lose its meaning. During the session, compare updates with the original premise rather than collecting an ever-growing list of unrelated reference prices.

The official comparison explicitly treats VS Pro and VS3D as separate subscriptions. Watching a positioning chart during a meeting does not necessarily provide a personal login to the data platform.

VS3D: inspect positions instead of just reading a level

The VS3D platform documentation describes SPX and VIX options positioning, participant categories, historical review and several analytical views. Positions can be inspected by strike, by expiration or in a grid combining the two dimensions.

This matters because an aggregate exposure can hide its composition. A large nearby expiration and smaller longer-dated positions may respond differently to time passing and to new trading. Looking across expirations helps explain whether a prominent total depends heavily on contracts that are about to disappear.

Participant selection is also material. Market-maker positioning and customer positioning answer different questions. Check the active participant filter before comparing screenshots or carrying a level from one workspace to another.

The platform’s purpose is to organize positions and risk sensitivities. A displayed exposure is not a record showing that a particular dealer has just bought or sold an exact quantity of futures. Actual hedge choices, timing and other market flows remain separate parts of the analysis.

Gamma, charm and vanna describe different changes

Gamma concerns how delta changes as the underlying price changes. Charm concerns the effect of time passing on delta. Vanna concerns how delta changes with implied volatility. Their usefulness comes from examining different conditions, rather than treating three charts as three votes for the same trade.

The annotated VS3D guide explains how the gradient views explore exposure across price and time. A forward-looking surface is a scenario calculation. It should not be read as a historical photograph of every price the market has already visited.

Before interpreting a surface, identify its Greek, units, selected expiration and reference time. A red area on one view need not carry the same economic meaning as red on another. Read the legend and the tooltip rather than transferring a familiar color rule from another platform.

Consider a level associated with one short-dated expiration. Its significance may change even if price barely moves, because time and volatility inputs can change. The analytical question is therefore how the exposure evolves under the current conditions, not whether yesterday’s line must hold again.

Data cadence and historical review

VolSignals currently describes VS3D position updates on a ten-minute cadence. That is different from assuming every underlying transaction appears instantly in the position model. A chart can move continuously while the positioning snapshot updates at its own interval.

Check the displayed time before comparing two states. Keep the same participant and expiration selections, then ask what changed: the position, market price, volatility assumptions, time remaining or several of these together.

The official release notes also distinguish modeled delta changes from current delta and describe a synthetic SPX price approximation outside regular hours. These details matter when interpreting a premarket chart: an approximation is not the same observation as the cash index during its regular session.

Replay is particularly useful for testing interpretations. Stop at a historical point, record the information then available and write a conditional expectation before moving forward. Looking at the full day’s path first makes it too easy to assign explanatory power to whichever exposure later looks important.

RTM: a different commitment of time and attention

The RTM product page describes a live room running from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time, combining commentary, signals and dealer-flow analysis. This is a different format from a morning meeting or independent dashboard research.

Its practical fit depends on your schedule. Someone able to follow a full session may value the ongoing explanation of changing conditions. Someone checking markets briefly between other obligations may find replay or a written research format easier to use consistently.

When comparing access, distinguish viewing data streamed inside the room from receiving your own standalone platform account. Confirm the current membership comparison and onboarding process before paying for a particular workflow.

Education helps explain the assumptions

The Dealer Hedging Dynamics course addresses delta hedging, positions, gamma, charm, vanna and practical applications. The VolStudies page describes a guided study of Sheldon Natenberg’s Option Volatility & Pricing.

The useful test of such education is whether you can explain why a position creates a sensitivity and which assumptions connect that sensitivity to a possible hedge. Memorizing a sign or a label is less robust than understanding what changes when price, time or implied volatility changes.

A workable study routine is to learn one concept, locate it in a position view and write a small scenario in plain English. Compare that scenario with subsequent observations while retaining examples that did not behave as expected.

Getting started

  1. Choose the format you need. Select VS Pro for research and commentary, VS3D for direct positioning analysis, or RTM for the full-session room. Confirm a personal VS3D login separately from access to charts shown in a broadcast.
  2. Set the VS3D scope if using the dashboard. Choose SPX or VIX, select the participant category and identify the expiration cohort before comparing exposures.
  3. Begin with one view and Greek. Use a strike, expiration or combined grid view to locate the concentration, then check its metric, units and legend. Add a gradient view only after identifying its price and time assumptions.
  4. Check the reference time. Distinguish the current positioning snapshot from historical replay. For a research meeting or replay, record the session and original assumptions before comparing later commentary or price behavior.

Check current product coverage, update intervals, replay access, course entitlements, Discord requirements and renewal terms. Separate recurring memberships from one-time educational purchases.

VolSignals is most relevant to readers willing to work through options mechanics and conditional reasoning. Its strongest practical use is to make a positioning thesis explicit enough to review, revise and learn from as the market changes.
