Barchart is a market information and research website covering stocks, options, futures and other instruments. Its appeal is breadth: quote pages, charts, screeners and watchlists provide different ways to move from a broad market question to a smaller set of instruments worth investigating.
That breadth also requires care. A stock quote, a futures chart and an options strategy screen do not necessarily use the same feed, timestamp or calculation. Treat each page as a specific dataset with its own settings, rather than assuming one account makes every number equally current.
Barchart is particularly relevant to traders who want to screen systematically, compare candidates and maintain repeatable watchlists. It is less useful when a long list of interesting statistics substitutes for a defined research question.

Start with a question, then build the screen
A screener works best when its filters express a clear idea. Examples include liquid stocks approaching an earnings event, options on a known watchlist, or covered-call candidates within a chosen expiration window. These are different tasks and should not share one oversized filter set.
Barchart’s options filter documentation describes “Found On” filters that start with underlying stocks appearing in other Barchart lists. This connects broad stock discovery with a more focused options search.
Begin with the investable universe and minimum liquidity. Then add the condition that makes the research interesting. Finally, inspect several excluded symbols as well as included ones. That last step helps reveal whether a filter measures what you intended or merely produces an attractive-looking table.
A result is a candidate for investigation. It does not explain a company’s finances, establish an executable option price or account for every event that may affect the position.
Quote feeds and timestamps need separate attention
Barchart’s chart data FAQ distinguishes Cboe BZX real-time symbols from delayed data for other instruments. Its watchlist documentation separately explains intraday and end-of-day views and the meaning of the Time column.
These help pages were last modified in 2020. They establish an important structural distinction, but their delay figures should not be treated as a current entitlement promise for every symbol. Check the notice on the live page, the exchange, the instrument and the account before relying on a displayed quote.
Real-time data from one venue is not automatically the same as a consolidated view of the entire market. Likewise, a page that refreshes regularly can still display delayed observations. Refresh frequency and the age of the underlying data are separate properties.
For a screen involving both stocks and options, inspect both timestamps. A calculation using an older option quote and a newer stock price can look different from a calculation made with synchronized observations. Confirm any actionable price with the execution platform.
Options screens: understand the calculation before ranking it
The covered-call screener documentation describes saved filters, results views, chart review and downloads. It also explains potential-return calculations and the use of delayed observations. Current access and limits need checking against the subscription offered today.
The useful distinction is between a scenario return and an expected return. A covered-call table may calculate what happens if shares are called away under stated assumptions. That does not assign a reliable probability to every possible stock path or incorporate the investor’s entire risk.
A high annualized number can be driven by a short remaining holding period. It does not mean the same opportunity can be repeated throughout the year at the same return. The underlying stock can decline, the call can cap participation in a rally, and assignment timing may matter around dividends.
Review the bid and ask, contract multiplier, expiration, earnings date and corporate actions. Adjusted contracts deserve particular attention because their deliverables can differ from a standard contract. A clean ranking cannot replace reading the instrument details.
Unusual activity is a starting point
An unusually active option can be worth investigating, but activity alone does not reveal a complete trade thesis. An execution might belong to a spread, a hedge, a roll or a closing transaction. A large contract count does not establish that the participant is making a fresh directional bet.
Compare volume with existing open interest, expiration and the underlying’s recent behavior. Then examine whether related strikes or expirations show activity at similar times. Even with that context, keep interpretation distinct from an observed transaction.
For historical review, Barchart’s unusual options activity help page documents access to past reports for Premier members. Verify the current history range and account requirements before making replay or backtesting a reason to subscribe.
Historical screening is most useful when the rules are fixed in advance. Selecting only the unusual contracts that later performed well teaches little about the full candidate set.
Watchlists and Flipcharts support an organized routine
A watchlist is useful when it represents a maintained research universe. Give each list a purpose: existing holdings, upcoming events, candidates awaiting confirmation or instruments being studied. Review and remove names when the reason for following them no longer applies.
Barchart’s Flipcharts guide describes paging through symbols from a table in chart form and applying a chart template. This is valuable for consistent comparison: the same time window, scale and indicators make differences easier to identify.
Avoid changing the chart setup for every candidate until each looks persuasive. First apply a common review framework. Then investigate instrument-specific details that genuinely justify a different view.
Getting started
- Choose the appropriate screener. Start with stocks or a defined options task, such as covered calls. Set the underlying universe and liquidity conditions before adding the criteria specific to that task.
- Read the result columns and timestamps. For options, check the expiration and the calculation behind the displayed return. Open a candidate’s quote page and compare the timing of the stock and option observations.
- Review the list with Flipcharts. Use the same chart template, time window and scale across the candidates so the comparison stays consistent. Check upcoming events before retaining a symbol.
- Keep a short research watchlist. Give the list a purpose and retain the filter settings, where supported by your account. Note why each symbol was included so the next screening run has a clear comparison point.
What to check before subscribing
Confirm the exact screeners, saved-screen capacity, downloads, alerts and historical access included in the current plan. Published help articles may retain older quotas or prices; the checkout terms and current account documentation should resolve those details.
Also distinguish a Barchart website subscription from an external market-data service. The official integration FAQ explains that Premier access to the website is separate from data arrangements for other trading software.
Barchart’s practical value is a repeatable research process across many instruments. Evaluate it by whether it helps you narrow a universe, understand the figures being compared and review the same question consistently. A larger collection of tables becomes useful only when the underlying question is precise.
